  • pro.choice.or.no.choice.

We have recently had to come up with topics that we feel strongly about, and I never realized before how strongly I feel about abortion. Now before you read any further, I'll let you know I'm pro-choice.
And yes, I feel strongly about it. Believe me, teenagers CAN feel strongly about things other than boys and music and candy. And i know i can be incredibly snobby-teen sounding at times. But we can't help it if no one in the world understands us
I can't even comprehend pro-life people. Yea so maybe they've never been in the position of a woman who was, say, raped and impregnated. By her own stepfather. When she was 9. And her body didn't have the strength to carry even one baby. AND she was carrying twins. AND she would most likely die in childbirth!! Got you there, didn't I? Read THAT story of a Brazilian girl here:  http://ipsnews.net/news.asp?idnews=46105
I really love these images. They really sum it all up.

Pro-life people need to understand:. A fetus before 24 weeks of pregnancy (point of viability) is a MASS OF TISSUE in the mother's womb. NOT a baby. The actual LIVING person in this situation is the mother. And she should have the choice.

    Pro-Choice. Or No Choice.

  • To Grease or Not to Grease?

If you've never heard or seen Grease, don't bother to read any further.

There's no denying it- Grease has got to be one of the most famous musicals/movies of the past, forget the 1970's! Everyone has their own favorite tune, and its celebrated all the time by theaters and chorus groups everywhere using its songs and playing out the musical for audiences to enjoy.
But really, what is Grease? A beautiful, innocent girl gets mixed up with a motorcycle bad-boy and in the end, ends up just like him? Is that the theme we love to sing along to? You're the one that I want, one that I want, Oo Oo Oo Honey...
Yes, Grease is famous and popular. But I have to say, even for a movie in the 1970's, which wasn't the most feminist of ages, its got a terrible main idea. Girls, change your entire self, and maybe then a boy will like you.
Is that really a necessary moral they're trying to get out to Grease fans? The innocent sweet Sandy changes herself completely just to be with Danny. And yes, its a happy ending, Danny and Sandy together forever. But is Danny really with Sandy? Or with a cheap, permed hair, leather-jacket, smoking imitation of Sandy? Which one does he really love?
I once saw a show about this girl who wanted to be just like Sandy. The motorcycle-babe Sandy, that is. She got her hair permed and wore black, and all that was fine until she took up smoking, because she figured if it made Sandy cool and popular, it would do the same for her. That same girl died in her early 30's with a smoking-caused lung disease, leaving behind two little girls motherless.
Do we want to show our kids this?
So, to Grease or not to Grease? That is the question.

  • Birthday Wishes, Turkey Dreams.

Happy Thanksgiving to all. Happy Birthday to me!

For the first time in some years, my birthday falls on Thankgiving. This is a good thing but also sort of sad because we can't continue our yearly tradition of going to Olive Garden on my birthday. We can, though, have a big dinner party at our house with all family, etc.

I'm thankful for a lot of things. My family, friends, school (believe it or not, coming from a just-turned teenager), my house, the fact that I grew up now, in such a great time, for the fact that I can go a whole day without any pain or hard work (except in Algebra). And for the fact that I can take this all for granted. We don't even realize it, growing up in the generation that we're in, but we are some of the luckiest people alive. Just having the bare essentials that we have is more than billions of people around the world can say they have. Every minute I spend wishing for something I want, someone else is dying for what I already have.

That's why I didn't really want much for my birthday in material things. Yes, I loved the presents and gift cards that I received, thank you very much, but when I made my wish over my All-American Chocolate Cake, it wasn't for a new laptop, skinny jeans (which I did receive as a present later), a puppy, or anything like that. I didn't even wish for the cliché-y world peace. I just want to be happy, and have a good 13th year with my family and friends, and wonderful years ahead too. I hope those wishes come true. That's all I really ask for.

And when you're saying "thank you" over the turkey, remember that we really are lucky.

Much luckier than the poor turkey, anyway. =]

  • Lucky

I just came across a very old Britney song.

    She's so lucky
    She's a star
But she cry cry cries in her lonely heart
Thinking, if there's nothing missing in my life
Then why do these tears come at night?

    Lucky, Britney Spears

Hard to believe this is the same Britney who now rules celebrity tabloids, who became one of the biggest faces of celeb life at only her 20-something years, who is the perfect example of what happens to innocents when they step into Hollywood.

Everyone can admit it: When we're young, we want to be famous. We want to be stars, to be known, to have all the glamor. When I was 7 or so, all of us wanted to be the next big thing like Britney. But then as I grew up, I realized that maybe the glamor isn't all that it seems to be. Sure, I'd like to be known when I'm older, but is it the right way to be known because of acting or singing, which soon just turns into celebriting as a career. Some of the biggest names in Hollywood haven't done a movie or recorded a single in years- they're just know for thier career as a celebrity. Do I want to be known for that? Wouldn't I rather be known for something great, like helping people out, something worthwhile? Sure, it might not get the media's attention and I'd most likely make the boring part of a newspaper that nobody reads rather than People, but is that what matters?

    What do you think?

  • Why Pay $$ For This Stuff??

A Rich Girl's Guide to What You NEED to Have in Your Wardrobe For Fall/Winter

    A.K.A.
Why Do People Pay $$$$ For This Stuff???

(inspired by lovesporks weblog on Uggs.. http://weblog.xanga.com/lovesporks/676833175/the-ugg-ly-thoughts.html)

     1. North Face... For those cold wintry days in New England, a regular jacket won't do. Instead you must order a $100 or more jacket from the North Face company, which provides the same warmth as a simple $10 sweatshirt does. Yes, the fuzzy ones are fun to feel, but my friend has a black one, and judging from the look of her car, you'd think she has a black crazy-shedding dog. Yes, they shed. Sorry you paid so much for this crappy jacket.

     2. Uggs boots. Fancy fancy. First of all, just the name makes you feel stupid saying it. Second, why buy these for tons of money when you can buy a pair of Aeropostale boots for $15 that keep your feet nice and cozy warm?? Why? Just because it doesn't have the tag on the back that says Ugg? And whats even worse is when you buy the aforementioned boots, you get asked constantly *Are those Uggs?* and when you say no, the eye-roll look from the prissy girls who would never wear Fuggs in their life. Yes, fake Uggs = Fuggs. Who wastes their time thinking of these things?

     3. Juicy Couture sweats. For God's sake, what happened to matching sweats being out for so long, then coming back in in the form of $200 sweats from Juicy? I actually heard some wannabe girl saying "I just got $700 from my bat mitzvah money! I can buy a Juicy now!" Please, of all the things that money can go to, you pick a soft tight sweatpant-sweatshirt set that you can buy minus the Juicy Logo for $30?? And not to mention the material aint so great when you go from a warm house into a freezing New England street.

There are plenty of other ridiculous fall/winter fashions in our school to make fun of. But I'm not gonna waste more time trying to phantom what goes on in these Rich Snobby Girl's heads.

(I'll probably not be the most liked Xangan after this, but too bad)
